Therapeutic Statement 42-03282028-11

Subject: James, Nora Emily, 15

Facility: Hamilton Detention Center TFC-42

I’m about to forget everything I’m going to tell you. So I’m only going to mention the parts that matter. To you, at least. The rest I’m going to keep to myself, for my self. For that old Nora James. The obedient daughter. The popular girl. The oblivious consumer. The one who really owns this cute little charm bracelet with the silver purse dangling from it. The one you want to keep around.

It all started a few weeks ago. It was a glossy day. No school. Downtown was having a sale to celebrate two quiet weeks in a row. And Mom was in one of her good moods—her post-TFC mood—and generous with the credit. A very glossy day.

We bought strappy sandals at Macy’s, a cute leather jacket at Bergdorf’s, and ice cream, low-fat chocolate mint, at Burkes. Then we were going to Fahrenheit Books for coffee and a new romance novel for Mom. We were doing our part to prime our feeble economy, as Dad likes to say, while the security patrol watched over us from their machine-gun nest atop Saks.

About the book:

Nora, the popular girl and happy consumer, witnesses a horrific bombing on a shopping trip with her mother. In Nora’s near-future world, terrorism is so commonplace that she can pop one little white pill to forget and go on like nothing ever happened. However, when Nora makes her first trip to a Therapeutic Forgetting Clinic, she learns what her mother, a frequent forgetter, has been frequently forgetting. Nora secretly spits out the pill and holds on to her memories. The memory of the bombing as well as her mother’s secret and her budding awareness of the world outside her little clique make it increasingly difficult for Nora to cope. She turns to two new friends, each with their own reasons to remember, and together they share their experiences with their classmates through an underground comic. They soon learn, though, they can’t get away with remembering

What people are saying:

“…the themes of inquiry and fighting back will resonate with young and old.”–School Library Journal

“… fuses the politically charged projections of Anderson’s Feed and Doctorow’s Little Brother with the breathtakingly personal implications of selective amnesia, resulting in a multi-threaded plot that manages to be both complex and comfortably easy to follow (in other words, enjoyable for sci-fi fans and newbies alike). The fast pace encourages readers to fall headfirst into a gripping suspense-adventure ride, letting the thematic issues simmer beneath the surface while they are carried away on the surprise twists, memorable supporting characters, and interpersonal dynamics (including a romance) that are absorbing but never melodramatic.”—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

About the author:

Angie was born in Blacksburg, a once sleepy college town in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. She grew up thinking she wanted to be a veterinarian; organic chemistry had other ideas. But she always had stories in her head. Eventually, after a few degrees and few cool jobs—including a 10-year stint at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center—she wrote some of those stories down. Angie has published many short stories, for both adults and teens. Her first novel, MEMENTO NORA, will be hitting the shelves in April 1, 2011. Chen Yong was already on board the ship.

Ai Ling stumbled when her spirit touched his and caught herself against a merchant’s bamboo stand. The old woman gave her a curious look as she set out eggplants and carrots. Ai Ling murmured an apology and veered off, the pungent scent of cilantro following her.

She couldn’t feel the spirits of others near the port yet. She was still too far away. But she was drawn to Chen Yong as if she had been starved for months for warmth and light. She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to slow her racing pulse. His face filled her vision: his inquisitive amber eyes, the strong lines of his jaw and cheekbones, his mouth curved into a smile that made him look boyish.

She had to get on that ship. His life depended on it.

It was barely dawn, and the large seaside city of Yuan Hai clamored to life. As Ai Ling approached the harbor, the hubbub of vendors in the narrow streets was punctuated by the cries of seagulls soaring above. Boys darted like sardines through the crowds. Women dressed in the same grays and blues as the men chorused in singsong voices; hawking sticky rice filled with pickles and minced pork, candied yams and hot soymilk to start the day and drive the cold away. Ai Ling’s stomach growled, but she didn’t stop.

Slipping from the labyrinth of buildings that leaned like haphazardly stacked dominoes, she finally stepped onto the broad main street. The seafront shopkeepers had already laid out their merchandise: embroidered handkerchiefs and slippers, fans adorned with lotus and dragonflies, gold earrings and jade bangles.

About the book:

The Gods have abandoned Ai Ling.

Her mysterious power haunts her day and night, and she leaves home—with just the moon as her guide—overwhelmed by her memories and visions and an unbearable sense of dread. For Ai Ling knows that Chen Yong is vulnerable to corrupt enchantments from the under-world. How can she do nothing when she has the skill and power to fight at his side? A dream has told her where he is, the name of the ship he is traveling on, his destination. So she steals off and stows away on board.

The ocean voyage brings with it brutal danger, haunting revelations, and new friendships, but also the premonition of a very real and terrifying threat. Zhong Ye—the powerful sorcerer whom Ai Ling believed she had vanquished in the Palace of Fragrant Dreams—is trapped in Hell, neither alive nor dead. Can he reach from beyond the grave to reunite with Silver Phoenix and destroy Chen Yong? And destroy whatever chance Ai Ling has at happiness, at love?

In this sequel to the acclaimed novel Silver Phoenix, four lives are woven together and four destinies become one, now and forever.

What people are saying:

“Cindy Pon’s writing is beautiful, conjuring up images of breathless adventure, heart-stopping romance, dangerous demons, and hidden secrets. Ai Ling is the sort of heroine you can’t help but root for. A thrilling ride from start to finish.”–Cassandra Clare, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series

Fury of the Phoenix is truly one of the most unique YA fantasies I’ve ever read. It is sexy and thrilling, and I really love Cindy Pon’s style. She writes with an appealing lightness and energy that gives great motion to the story.”–Malinda Lo, Author of Ash and Huntress

“When will you be back?” I asked, holding Papa’s hand at the bus stop.

Worry coated Papa’s face. “As soon as I can earn enough money.”

“Should I get a job too?” I asked. “I could ask if they need help in the church.”

Papa’s eyebrows drew together over his glasses, “No. Your job is not to grow up until I get back.” He cupped my chin in his hand and his eyes brimmed with tears.

I reached up and pulled off his glasses to clean them with the edge of my cotton skirt. “Ignacio’s Papa never came back. Then, her family left.” What if that happened to us?

Mama shuffled her sandaled feet in the dusty road and cleared her throat. “Arturo, the bus will be here soon.”

“Why can’t we go with you?” I felt the dryness of the land crawling into my throat. “I promise I won’t be a burden. Mama can stay here to take care of Grandma and the orchard. Please, don’t go.”

Mama smoothed the stray hairs from my braid, “Nora, we talked about this. You can’t go with Papa. We all agreed this is for the best.”

I snapped at her. “I didn’t agree. I don’t even want presents for my birthday or a communion dress. We should just try harder. HERE!”

Mama’s face crinkled up in hurt, “It’s not about wanting. Please don’t make this so hard for him.”

“I wish I could stay, but the buyers don’t come the pueblos anymore. The drought. No jobs. We need the money, mija.” Papa pulled me close and kissed the top of my head. “I promise I’ll be back. I always keep my promises.” A small gold cross dangled out of his shirt. “I will. Even far away,” his voice vibrated.

“Do you really have to go away to make things better?” I asked

The bus turned the corner and Papa released me, picking up his black plastic bag. I tangled my arms around his waist. “Don’t go. Please, don’t go. I need you Papa.”

Papa tried to separate us. “Nora, there is no other choice. This is how I will protect us. Just for a little while.”

“NO!!!” I screamed. “NO! NO! NO!”

“I love you, Nora. Ti amo, Aurora.”

Mama squeezed between us to hug Papa, but I found that I couldn’t let go. Mama slowly wedged herself into my grasp, and he pulled away.

“NOOOOO!” Mama’s tight arms pulled me away and he boarded the bus.

I kicked and scratched at her, “We can’t let him go. No Papi, Nooo!”

The bus lurched away, leaving me sitting in the dirt with tears streaking down my face.

They took me in my nightgown.

Thinking back, the signs were there—family photos burned in the fireplace, Mother sewing her best silver and jewelry into the lining of her coat late at night, and Papa not returning from work. My younger brother, Jonas, was asking questions. I asked questions, too, but perhaps I refused to acknowledge the signs. Only later did I realize that Mother and Father intended we escape. We did not escape.

We were taken.

June 14, 1941. I had changed into my nightgown and settled in at my desk to write my cousin Joana a letter. I opened a new ivory writing tablet and a case of pens and pencils, a gift from my aunt for my fifteenth birthday.

The evening breeze floated through the open window over my desk, waltzing the curtain from side to side. I could smell the lily of the valley that Mother and I had planted two years ago. Dear Joana.

It wasn’t a knocking. It was an urgent booming that made me jump in my chair. Fists pounded on our front door. No one stirred inside the house. I left my desk and peered out into the hallway. My mother stood flat against the wall facing our framed map of Lithuania, her eyes closed and her face pulled with an anxiety I had never seen. She was praying.

“Mother,” said Jonas, only one of his eyes visible through the crack in his door, “are you going to open it? It sounds as if they might break it down.”

The Forest, Early Evening

Through the skull in my fireplace, I watch her. Does she know, I wonder? Does she sense my presence? It is hard to say. But I suppose it does not really matter. We are connected in ways she does not yet understand—ways that even I find curious. I am Baba Yaga, and she is Anne, and our destinies have mingled, twisted tightly together even before she found her way to my forest. Anne Michaelson—the ordinary girl who wasn’t ordinary at all. The one who brought Anastasia out from my hut and captured the heart of a foolish man named Ethan. The one who weeps quietly, night after night, because she saved a girl who chose to die, and this does not sit easily on her heart. I would help her, I think, if I were not what I am. But as that cannot change, at least for now, I watch. I offer no balm. No words of comfort.

I am the glorious Baba Yaga. And while this is not a simple thing, it is what it is. I am the one who changes others. The Bone Mother. The Crone. For ever and ever, I have flown the skies in my mortar. Stirred the air with my pestle. Ground my enemies to dust or chewed them whole with my iron teeth and placed their heads on pikes outside my hut. I have come and gone as I pleased. Danced barefoot in my forest. Felt the sting of icy rain on my skin. Ridden fast through the woods with my horsemen. Taken lovers when I pleased. Reveled in the summer air. Laughed with glee as autumn approached. My season. The time of change. The wonderful approach of death.

But no matter how hard she tries to move on, Anne still misses the spark she felt with Ethan. Anne doesn’t dare tell anyone about that… she’s got bigger secrets to keep anyway. A mysterious wild-haired woman is stalking Anne, haunting her wherever she goes. Anne’s search for the woman’s identity exposes deep and startling revelations – including the possible source of Anne’s powers. With her heart torn between Ben and Ethan, Anne’s life is about to get a lot more complicated. Will Anne discover the truth about her destiny? Or will the longings of her own heart get in the way?

“You don’t want to kill me,” I said.

“Of course I don’t, Clare. But I have to.”

If I wasn’t already bleeding, with the room tilting and swaying, I would have slapped myself. I never saw this coming. I had let my personal feelings cloud my judgment. And now I was looking down the barrel of a gun.

I never thought it would end like this, me on the hardwood floor in my house, propped up on my elbows, begging for my life. On my right was the crumpled body of a guy I hadn’t fully realized the depths of my feelings for until I saw the bullet rip into him.

I tried to use reason again. To buy myself just one more minute of life. “This isn’t you,” I said, pleading. “You’re not a murderer.”

“A couple weeks ago, I would’ve said the same thing. But you should know more than anyone how people surprise you. People can do things you never imagined they would. You think you know someone and then . . .”

My would-be killer shrugged and cocked the gun.

Then the world went black.

About the book:

Clarity “Clare” Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch an object and the visions come to her. It’s a gift.

And a curse.

When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare’s ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case — but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare’s brother — who has supernatural gifts of his own — becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?

What people are saying:

“Harrington’s well-developed characters and tight plot are simultaneously charming, realistically complex, and intriguing. While recalling classic sleuth stories, Harrington creates a fiery and sharp-witted heroine who’s more Veronica Mars than Nancy Drew (Nancy almost certainly never used the term “Skanky McSkankbag”). Clare is a teen detective for the 21st century.”–Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Released: March 1, 2011

About the author:

Kim Harrington lives in Massachusetts with her husband and son. When not writing, she’s most likely reading, watching one of her favorite TV shows, or fantasizing about her next vacation. She has no psychic powers and is cool with that. You can visit her at www.kimharringtonbooks.com.

Her email didn’t move or disappear or do any of the creepy things I’d expect an email from a ghost to do. It was just there. Existing.

Kate,

I’m here…

Sort of.

Find Cameron.

He knows.

I shouldn’t be writing.

Don’t tell.

They’ll hurt you.

The words blurred on the screen, and my hands went limp. My phone clattered to the hardwood floor, the battery popping off and sliding beneath my bed.

Dead best friends didn’t send emails.

I shook my head fiercely in an attempt to clear my thoughts. It was the anniversary of her death, and I missed Grace more than anything. Maybe my mind was just playing tricks on me. Maybe this wasn’t really happening.

I took a deep breath, grabbed my laptop, and refreshed my mail. My hand flew to cover my mouth when I saw her name on the screen again. As much as I wanted to believe that the email was from Grace, my mind just couldn’t make the leap.

Maybe this was some kind of joke, but that kind of cruelty didn’t seem possible. Plus we guarded our email passwords with our lives, and there was no way anyone was capable of hacking into the school’s database.

When I reread the words, something deep inside of me—buried beneath all the anger and guilt—woke up. It was as though I’d spent the last year living in a fog of grief and regret, and suddenly the atmosphere had cleared. My room looked the same, but the blue of the walls was more vibrant, the white of my duvet brighter.

I had sent Grace hundreds of emails over the past year. Trying to describe how much I missed her, how much my life sucked without her, and how much I needed my best friend back. I kept expecting our school, Pemberly Brown, to delete her account, kept waiting for the moment my emails would bounce back undeliverable. But that moment never came. Was it possible that after all this time, after all those emails, Grace had actually written me back?
